Gold for Firestone’s Pivo Hoppy Pils
I tried my first Pivo Hoppy Pils after Firestone Walker Brewing won their second consecutive Gold medal at the Great American Beer Festival in Denver last week. Pivo is a German-style pilsener, so you can expect a bright, malty, hoppy, aromatic and crisp finishing lager. Pivo does not disappoint! The pour was a brilliant light gold with a big white, creamy head. The moderately high carbonation is evident as beads of bubbles stream to the surface. As I poke my nose in the glass a bold aroma of flowers jumps out almost shockingly. Wow! A second whiff reveals some malty graininess and more spicy hop notes. The flavor has a faint malty sweetness that is checked immediately by Noble hop flavor and moderate, pleasant Noble hop bitterness. As the beer warms a bready malt note starts to show at the end of the taste. Crisp, clean and refreshing. The finish is crisp and dry with a nice lingering hop bitterness that holds on until the next sip.
Now I understand why Pivo Hoppy Pils has won the Gold for two years running…it deserves it.
Prost!
