Yeah, hops are kind of a big deal.
Poor, under appreciated Humulus lupulus. Hops contribute so much to the brewing process that it’s almost like magic at work. We know about the obvious bitterness, flavor and aroma, but they also offer so much more. Here’s a list of attributes that hops provide to the brewing process. One does not belong. Which one is it?
The answer is….”Not Ingredient in the Reinheinsgebot Law”! Barley, water and hops were the only three ingredients allowed by the German Beer Purity Law established in 1516. In the 1800s Louis Pasteur discovered the role of microorganisms in the process of fermentation and the law was later amended to include yeast. Hops are extremely powerful and important to the brewing process.
