Thai Food and Beerlao
Beerlao is the national beer of Laos.
Thai food and beer from Laos. The pairing worked pretty well, but I prefer Singha with my Thai food. The 5% abv Beerlao lager is a light golden color with a frothy white head. I noted a faint buttery nose with no hop aroma.
I detected a grainy flavor that detracted from an otherwise clean lager. On the darkside I tried the 6.5% Beerlao Dark. A slightly sweet start with a roasted mailtiness that was much smoother than pale version. This dark lager had a huge white head that lasted forever. Like the “Lager” there is no noticeable hop aroma or flavor. The sweet/maltiness balanced out the spicy food. I preferred the dark over the lighter style.
Beerlao contains polished rice in the grist that is grown in Laos. Malted barley is imported from Belgium and Germany and they use German yeast. Lao Brewing Company has been brewing since 1973. In 2005 Lao Brewing entered into a 50/50 owner partnership between the Lao Government and Carlsberg Breweries.
They are both worth a try. If only one is an option…go with the dark.
Chok dee!
