Belgian’s at the Trappist
Petrus Aged Pale & St Feullien Triple
The Trappist in Oakland was once again a must stop. They are located on 460 8th St at Broadway. Very unique. Very cool. Visit the Front Bar and the Back Bar. You can order any beer from either bar.
This stop I ordered the Petrus Aged Pale. It is a Flanders Oud Bruin by style which is an ale aged in Oak for 2-3 years. An interesting aroma of grass, fruity esters and a hint of oak. Some caramel also hiding in the background. The flavor starts with a sherry-like sweetness that immediately turns almost sour. Very complex. Cool stuff happening in my mouth. The finish is slightly sour with a tart bite. Also a less than expected oak/vanilla late in the finish. Very nice.
To even up my order I tasted the St. Feulliens Triple. This triple starts with an aroma of malt, pepper, yeast, fruity esters and some citrus notes. The flavor is malt biscuitiness, spicy, citrusy and has a lingering licorice note on the palate. The high carbonation level adds to the impression of increased hop bitterness that aids in the dry finish. Nice and smooth and quite quaffable for an 8.5% beer.
